Carmel Toffee Squares

 

1 cup plus 4 tsp butter, softened

¼ cup sugar

1 ¼ cup flour

½ cup light brown sugar

2 Tbsp light corn syrup

½ cup sweetened condensed milk

1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

 

Preheat oven 350 degrees. Mix ½ cup plus 2 tsp butter, sugar, and flour in bowl.  Press into a greased 9x9 inch baking pan.  Bake for 20 minutes.  Cool.  Combine the brown sugar, ½ cup butter, corn syrup, and condensed milk in a heavy saucepan.  Bring to a boil.  Boil for 5 minutes.  Remove from heat.  Beat well and pour over the cooked and cooled base.  Chill covered, until set.  Melt 2 tsp butter and chocolate chips over low heat.  Pour over the filling.  Refrigerate of freeze.  Cut into squares.
